Again, I recognize this is not an acceptable way to treat someone you “love” - its not a healthy ship in the traditional sense. Could explain treatment of her over the years. I think not being able to express her feelings for TyLee would make someone as manipulative as Azula very angry at/jealous toward TyLee - who is obviously able to be open with her feelings. Being barred from having someone she wants because it would “muddy” her ~royal reputation~ would be a huge point of contention between her and Ozai, if she ever confronts him about rejecting that part of who she is.
I think that would be a good way to finally give Azula some shred of redemption. I understand it’s a toxic relationship, but I’ve been in them myself and you learn and grown from them.
#Roku and sozin gay sex art code#
The Christian emperors did legislate against homosexuality, but it was from the 4th century onwards, after Constantine ended the persecution of Christianity (the Theodosian Code itself was written in 429). There was also the discrimination against the "receivers" for considering it womanly (one of the main insults Caesar received was that he had been a bottom for king Nicomedes IV of Bythinia, for example), which in practice meant you could fuck a male slave, prostitute or plebeian but not cuddle with your fellow patrician because that means one of you had to receive and that's bad. Now, that didn't stop the men from engaging in openly homosexual relations (emperor Hadrian and his lover Antiochus are a good example), but there was no actual marriage. There was no gay marriage as we know it because in the Roman mind legitimate marriage only existed between a man and a woman, both Roman citizens (or at least had been granted the ius connubi, the right to marry a Roman citizen) past puberty. Of course, the relative lack of primary sources and the Spanish conquest makes it very difficult to know how things actually worked.Īlso, things worked somewhat different in the Roman world. Also, the Incas apparently persecuted homosexuals too (though in the northern regions of the Empire it appears they were far more tolerant).
It seems that the Aztecs looked down upon homosexuality (viewing it as unmanly), and cults like that of Xochipilli (Toltec god of love, homosexuality, male prostitution, among other things) declined under the Mexica invaders. It seems in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, opposition to same-sex marriage only begins when Christian/Islamic missionaries & conquerors brought the ideas, often making them law to the point where it now stuck as a social norm even after they were kicked out.Īt least in the Americas, that's not completely true either. In Greek culture, and I think northern European such as the Vikings, same-sex relationships were somewhat common, but there was some looking down on the person considered the 'receiver', but not the person who was considered the 'dominant', and so it wasn't opposition to same-sex interaction per se, since they were fine with one of the two people doing it. There were a few Roman Emperors with husbands before that. The word marriage predates Christianity by quite a bit, and there were previous religions which had goddesses of Marriage (e.g. Roman Christian Emperors changed the definition of marriage in something like 150-300AD (can't remember when, it was called the Theodosian Code or something), which disallowed gay marriage and ordered all married gay people to be publicly executed by burning to death.
